Do I need to set up an SSL certificate?

No. Solo will automatically configure a free SSL certificate via Google and handle its renewals when you connect a custom domain to your Solo website. Upon connecting your domain to Solo, please also make sure that you do not have an existing CAA DNS record as that will prevent Solo from issuing an SSL certificate and will cause your domain to fail to connect.
