Do I need to set up an SSL certificate?
Guidance on SSL certificate setup and issuance timeline when connecting a custom domain to your Solo website
No. Solo will automatically configure a free SSL certificate via Google and handle its renewals when you connect a custom domain to your Solo website.
SSL provisioning timeline
After your DNS records are correctly set and verified by Solo, SSL certificate issuance typically completes within a few minutes to a few hours. During this window, visitors may briefly see a browser security warning — this is normal and will resolve automatically once the certificate is issued.
My DNS is connected but I'm still seeing an SSL error
If your domain's DNS records are correctly pointing to Solo but your browser is showing an SSL or HTTPS error, the most common causes are:
- You just connected your domain — SSL provisioning is still in progress. Wait up to a few hours and try again.
- You have a CAA DNS record — A CAA (Certification Authority Authorization) record restricts which certificate authorities can issue SSL certificates for your domain. Solo uses Google's certificate infrastructure, so if your CAA record does not include
pki.goog, Solo cannot issue a certificate. To fix this, either delete the CAA record or add an entry to allowpki.goog. - Your domain was recently re-connected or re-configured — If you disconnected and reconnected your domain, a new certificate needs to be issued. Allow a few hours for this to complete.
- Your domain is no longer connected to a Solo site — If the site associated with your domain was deleted or the domain was removed, the SSL certificate will no longer be active. Re-connecting the domain to a Solo site will trigger a new certificate.
Checking for a CAA record
You can check whether your domain has a CAA record using the Google Dig tool. Enter your domain and select the CAA record type. If a CAA record is present, it must include pki.goog to allow Solo to issue your certificate.
